Eclipses are among the most powerful cosmic events for spell work. Learn how to harness the intense energy of solar and lunar eclipses for profound spiritual transformation.
Eclipses are among the most dramatic and spiritually significant astronomical events that affect human life. For thousands of years, across virtually every culture that has observed the sky, eclipses have been understood as times of heightened cosmic power — moments when the ordinary rules of reality are suspended and the potential for transformation is magnified many times over.
In African spiritual tradition, eclipses are treated with enormous respect. They are times of powerful energy that, if worked with skillfully, can produce results of extraordinary speed and magnitude. If approached carelessly or without proper preparation, they can amplify negative patterns as easily as positive ones. The skill lies in knowing how to direct eclipse energy intentionally.
Solar Eclipses: Endings and New Beginnings
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, briefly blocking the sun's light. Energetically, a solar eclipse supercharges the power of the new moon (which is always when solar eclipses occur) to an extraordinary degree. Where a regular new moon supports planting seeds of new intention, a solar eclipse supports instant, dramatic new beginnings and radical releases of what has been blocking progress.
Solar eclipses are ideal for: releasing deeply embedded patterns that have resisted ordinary spell work, beginning major new phases of life (a new business, a new relationship, a geographic relocation), setting intentions that you want to manifest with unusual speed and force, and performing banishing work to permanently remove what no longer serves you.
Lunar Eclipses: Revelation and Release
A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and moon, casting the earth's shadow on the moon. Energetically, a lunar eclipse supercharges the power of the full moon. Where a regular full moon brings things to culmination and illuminates what is hidden, a lunar eclipse brings dramatic revelations, sudden clarity on long-confusing situations, and the opportunity for profound emotional and spiritual releases.
Lunar eclipses are ideal for: revealing the truth in confusing situations, releasing emotional wounds that have been held too long, performing healing work at a deep level, divination and spiritual readings (the veil is thin), and releasing relationships or situations that have been clinging past their time.
Preparing for Eclipse Spell Work
Begin preparing three days before an eclipse. Increase your meditation, reduce unnecessary social activity, and focus your intention on what you want to work with during the eclipse itself. Cleanse your working space and tools particularly thoroughly. Journal about what you want to release, what you want to attract, and what you want to transform.
The Eclipse Intention Ritual
During a solar eclipse, perform your intention-setting work as the eclipse reaches maximum coverage. Light a black candle (for the darkness of the eclipse) and a gold or white candle (for the light returning after totality). Write your most important, transformative intention on gold paper with black ink. Speak it aloud three times during the maximum darkness of the eclipse, then burn the paper as the light begins to return, releasing the intention into the amplified eclipse energy.
During a lunar eclipse, write what you want to release on black paper in white ink. Burn it at the moment of totality, when the moon is fully in shadow, releasing it into the reddish light of the blood moon. Then write what you want to attract on white paper and hold it up to the returning moonlight as the eclipse concludes.
Caution and Respect
Eclipse energy is powerful and non-discriminating — it amplifies everything equally. Do not perform eclipse spell work in a state of anger, grief, or confusion. If your intention is unclear or your emotional state is turbulent, the eclipse energy will amplify that turbulence. Wait for stability before working with eclipse power, or seek the guidance of Prof Mama Jafali, who can perform eclipse workings on your behalf with the clarity and skill that the intensity of this energy demands.
